07 Mar Ranum Efterskole Climate Organisation
Do you also think that all that with climate and activism sounds mega cool? Then read on, because we've got a climate club at the school!
How did the organisation come about?
Ranum Efterskole Climate Organisation is created by students from the year 21-22, where student Erika sowed the idea to make a strike under the organisation "Fridays for Future".
This resonated with a number of students, who decided to join forces on the project and organise a protest on 25 March 2022. And then it took off. A full organisation was set up, and weekly meetings were then added to the mix.
Student Spence tells us a bit about the start-up process:
“A few of us thought it would be cool to join in and plan a strike here in Ranum. Once we started planning, it just seemed natural to get together more in our spare time and continue with all the cool ideas we had together, and thus we created the Ranum Climate Club.“
The theme of the protest is #PeopleNotProfit, and is part of a global strike.
#FridaysForFuture
Fridays for Future is a youth organisation that started when Greta Thunberg protested in front of the Swedish Parliament in 2018, demanding immediate action on climate. This inspired young people around the world, who started organising climate protests under the hashtag #FridaysForFuture.

The work of the organisation:
But what do they do on a daily basis, the lovely climate club? I'll tell you! Member Spence talks about their weekly work, as well as preparing for the protest on 25 March:
"When we don't have a project as big as this going on, we work on ideas to improve our school. We have at least one meeting a week, (usually Wednesday night activity) where anyone who is interested is welcome. Our only requirement to become part of our club is that you show up to meetings and are ready to work.”
Ranum Efterskole Climate Organisation:
The club currently consists of about 15-20 students who meet once a week and work on the above. Club member Spence says the following about why the work is important:
"Afterschool is about more than just learning how to count and put commas. It's where we have the chance to learn the real things like how to do our own laundry and how to order nemid. And in between all that is learning about the system, the society that is currently pushing current problems onto our generation.
It is important we therefore learn that the plastic bag we buy will exist for 5 times as long as ourselves, and that just because McDonald's has changed their logo to green, it doesn't mean they are more climate friendly.
All these little things that we don't learn make us blind to what's happening right in front of us. That's why it's important we focus on teaching each other about climate change and all it entails.”
So, it's based on important issues, but focused a lot on how those issues affect students' everyday lives and futures.
Next year, the club will be passed on to the next student team.
As a school, we are proud of our students, who take important initiatives to make their mark on the world they find themselves in. That's why the REC fully supports the club and we look forward to sending them to their first demonstration with the full support of their community.
Here you can see a picture from RECO's first protest back in September.
