22 Nov Talks on War, TEBO, Intercultural Night and Global Factor flashbacks
Dear reader,
The first snow is magical - every year. This year we have many students from foreign climes who experienced the world dressed in white for the first time. They jumped out and were stunned by the cold while taking and sharing photos for their families back home. The students returned from the extended weekend with renewed energy and the 9th grade got straight to work on a week-long project assignment, while the 10th grade headed off for the last 3 days of TEBO (Thematic Vocational Bridge Building and OSO project). It has been a good week, even though the students have been scattered, and this coming weekend we have Sibling Weekend, where our students have the opportunity to invite their siblings for overnight stays and visits. In the coming week we have Performance Week, which culminates on Saturday with a musical, Christmas market, presentations on cultural subjects, and talks with the contact teachers.
First snow & Kærhuset decorates.
When we get down to 7-8 degrees below zero during the day, things suddenly start to get exciting. A lot of cosiness can start from such a fresh cold. Coffee, hot chocolate, mittens, stoves, thick Christmas jumpers and more. We've got it, just like the rest of the country. The cold, but especially the cosiness. We made a little video from when the first snow landed.
At the same time, Kærhuset has made good progress in the Christmas spirit. They have found the old Christmas decorations but also made new ones.
And some pictures from Kærhuset.
Love, peace and conflicts or Why War?
Monday afternoon, the theme for the students was War and Conflict with a focus on the war in Ukraine and the conflict between Palestine and Israel. We had two exciting lectures by Mikkel Storm Jensen, Major, PhD and Military Analyst at the Danish Defence Academy, and Jochi Barat, who was born and raised in a Kibutz in Israel and has been a conscript and professional soldier in the Israeli army. Mikkel Storm Jensen soberly reviewed "What is War and why is there war in the world", while Jochi talked about the conflict between Israel and Palestine, about life, war and having Palestinian friends. The students are now better equipped to understand conflicts and war, so they can nuance the news picture.
Surgery on oranges, harvesting oysters, combat robots and more.
TEBO brings widely different experiences from 9 worlds / industries into the community and it provides a lot of talk and inspiration. The collaboration with the many youth education programmes and companies has gone well, but some students, e.g. the Blue World, have had to travel a lot by bus to Martec in Frederikshavn and to DTU Aqua on Mors.
This includes robot building and oyster harvesting.
Intercultural evening
On Wednesday evening, our AFS invited guest students from India, Guatemala and other countries to an Intercultural Evening. They organised a fantastic event with a dance show, dance workshop, bingo games and delicious refreshments. More than 250 students participated in the festivities and experienced that the world has also entered the November darkness at Ranum.
