Back from travelling, cultural education has started, international friendships and creative mornings.

Welcome back from travelling!

The school is buzzing with life and happy voices again! Our students have returned from their exciting themed trips and we can feel the excitement in the air. Let's take a look at what has happened and what we have to look forward to.

Our students have just completed two fantastic winter holidays:

  • Cultural discovery in Prague: a journey filled with city walks, art, ballet and a touching visit to a local high school.
  • Skiing in Sweden: Students stayed in cosy cabins, mastered ski school and enjoyed the abundant snow.

These trips have not only given students unforgettable experiences, but also strengthened the community across houses and subjects. It is precisely this mix of adventure, learning and unity that makes Ranum so special.

We're off to a good start with cultural education

Ranum Efterskole College is buzzing with activity and anticipation as our cultural programmes are in full swing. These subjects are at the heart of our mission to create global citizens through meeting other cultures and young people from all over the world.

Nepal High Trek: A journey of self-development and cultural understanding

While the impressions of winter travelling are still fresh, one of our most exciting cultural subjects, Nepal High Trek, has already taken the first steps towards their Himalayan adventure. On Wednesday 15 January 2025, a group of dedicated students hiked 10 km with fully loaded backpacks in Vilsted. This was not just a walk, but an important preparation for their upcoming expedition in March. Travelling to Nepal is a unique opportunity to:

  • Explore a fascinating culture up close and personal
  • Build physical and mental strength
  • Understand global challenges through local eyes
  • Create lifelong friendships and memories

Cultural studies is an experience of a lifetime

Our students don't just return home with full camera rolls, but with expanded horizons and a deeper understanding of the world and themselves. Whether it's Nepal, Argentina or Japan that beckons, our culture courses promise to open doors to the world in a way no textbook can. Are you ready to let your children take the leap into a world of possibilities?

International friendships flourish

On Wednesday evening, our AFS students from Argentina, New Zealand, Australien and India met with their Danish host families for the weekend. It was a joy to see how everyone quickly got chatting and started getting to know each other. These young people now have the opportunity to experience everyday Danish life up close. We would like to say a big thank you to all the families who have opened their homes to our international guests. You give them a unique opportunity to experience Danish culture from the inside.

Creative morning start: Art & Design spreads joy with bread art

On Friday morning, our school got off to a special start thanks to our talented Art & Design team. In a charming and thought-provoking happening, the students created a unique form of ephemeral art that not only nourishes the soul, but also our feathered friends. With great creativity and care, students moulded inspirational quotes out of bread and placed them in front of the school. This simple but brilliant idea combined artistic expression, positive messages and care for nature. Among the heartwarming quotes were:

  • "Live, laugh, love"
  • "Good things take time"
  • "You look good"
  • "Good day"
  • "Smile <3"
  • "Sleep 8 hours"

In both Danish and English, these bread artworks spread smiles and reflection among passers-by before becoming a feast for the local birds.

This morning activity is a perfect example of what our Art & Design subject stands for: developing students' ability to communicate visually, promoting creative thinking and innovation, and encouraging them to see the world through a more colourful and positive prism.

We are incredibly proud of our Art & Design students and their ability to see opportunities to make the world a little more beautiful and thoughtful - even in something as simple as a piece of bread.

Headmaster's column

Dear reader,

Mobile phones are an integral part of our everyday lives for parents, students and staff alike. So what happens when students don't have them for a week? We found out this week when we made a "new" start on mobile-free communities from Monday to Friday. We have found that the young people are super good at adapting and have managed to do without their mobile phones with almost no frustration or complaints, even though they are their watch, alarm clock, payment method, schedule and calendar. Conversely, we've had a number of parents who didn't realise that their student was without their phone and couldn't understand why their phone wasn't answered. The mobile-free week is part of the digital literacy programme and, somewhat unwittingly, it also included parents.

The cultural subjects are now in full swing and this year we have a special focus on cultural understanding, we have formed a team that runs internal courses for all students and teachers to give them the tools to work more with culture and sustainability in the exciting cultural subjects and on the trips in March.

There has been a debate in the media about whether parents should or can take their children out of school for private holidays. At Ranum, we don't have winter holidays and we travel 4-5 weeks out of the 43 weeks of the school year, so we have told parents in advance that this is not a good idea. In addition, there are term exams in the context of the summer written exams in week 8, and it is important that the students experience sitting in the large rooms and understand the practicalities of the course, access to internet and print etc.

We wish everyone a very good weekend.
