14 Feb Snuff presentation, Valentine Café, Krea Weekend and Culture Day
Dear reader,
Another week has passed at Ranum Efterskole, and it has offered creativity, community and exciting reflections.
We enjoyed the Valentine Café, where the students decorated hearts and enjoyed hot chocolate in good company. Krea Weekend was all about creativity with jewellery making and lots of immersion. Year 9 visited the Energy Museum where they experimented with future energy solutions, and the week also included a thought-provoking presentation on snuff and addiction. In Argentina, students explored the Argentinian art form Fileteado Porteño - an inspiring day of colour, creativity and cultural immersion. The Japan team tried their hand at karate and sumo wrestling.
Read more about it all in this week's newsletter!
Have a great weekend!
Krea Weekend at Ranum Efterskole
Krea Weekend at Ranum Efterskole was a weekend filled with creativity, where students immersed themselves in various creative activities. They made jewellery, wove bracelets and experimented with beads, colours and patterns. The atmosphere was cosy and relaxed, leaving room for both concentration and good conversation.
Many students threw themselves into jewellery making, creating their own unique designs. Beads were sorted, cords were braided and small details were carefully customised. It was a wonderful mix of creativity and community, where ideas were shared and inspiration flowed freely.
Krea Weekend wasn't just for the creative projects though. Some students also spent their time relaxing, playing games and enjoying a quiet weekend with friends. Music played in the background and the atmosphere was characterised by laughter and good conversation.

Visiting the Energy Museum - a day of learning and experimentation
On Monday 10 January, Year 9 went on a field trip to the Energy Museum in Bjerringbro for a day of learning, hands-on experiments and a deeper understanding of energy, power and sustainability.
Students explored how energy is created and used through both historical and modern perspectives. They tested how much energy they could generate by turning a windmill wheel and investigated the effect of wind speed on small wind turbines. They also experimented with fuel cells and electricity through interactive stations.
The museum also provided an insight into both the power plants of the past and the energy solutions of the future, emphasising the importance of sustainability.
In addition to academic learning, the trip provided an opportunity to strengthen the classroom community, where students discussed energy solutions and climate issues. The day sparked thoughts about our future energy consumption and how we can use energy more sustainably.

Presentation on snus set thoughts in motion at Ranum Efterskole
On Tuesday 11 February, Ranum Efterskole was visited by Frederik and Jeppe, who gave a thought-provoking presentation entitled A daily life as a snus consumer. Frederik, a 22-year-old former efterskoleelev from Slagelse, shared his personal story of how his snus use went from a cosy habit to a regular part of everyday life. He spoke honestly about the impact the addiction had on his life, how he started hiding his use and how difficult it was to break out of the habit.
The presentation focused on the increasing use of snus and puffbars among young people and the health consequences that many may underestimate. Frederik and Jeppe gave an insight into how nicotine can quickly become a habit and why it often starts in primary school.
Frederik and Jeppe left a strong impression on the students, who had the opportunity to reflect on their own choices and habits. The presentation also created an important conversation about young people's relationship with nicotine and addiction, both among students and teachers.
Ranum Efterskole appreciates their visit and hopes that their honest stories can inspire students to make conscious choices. The school will continue to work to create a learning environment where there is room for reflection and dialogue about the issues that shape young people's lives.

Valentine Café - a cosy evening in the sign of love
On Tuesday 11 February, the students gathered for a very special Valentine Café. With hot chocolate, coffee and creative activities, it was an evening filled with fellowship, laughter and good conversation.
The café not only offered hot drinks, but also a creative workshop where students decorated little hearts. Some made them as a gift for someone special, while others hung their hearts on the school Valentine tree. There were smiles everywhere, concentrated brush strokes and conversations about everything from love to everyday joys.
The DJ provided great music, while the students had fun painting, drinking hot chocolate and enjoying the relaxed atmosphere. It was an evening where the spirit of efterskole really shone through. A perfect blend of fun, creativity and space to be themselves.

Argentina Culture Day - creative immersion in Argentinian art
Wednesday 12 February was a day filled with colour, creativity and cultural inspiration as students immersed themselves in Culture Day Argentina. Fileteado Porteño, a traditional art form from Buenos Aires, took centre stage.
With its distinctive curved lines, bold colours and detailed ornaments, Fileteado Porteño has adorned everything from carts and buses to facades in Argentina's capital city.
Students threw themselves into recreating the style - some with classic patterns and decorations, others with portraits and personal interpretations.
The day offered a great combination of art, history and culture, where students not only learnt about a new art form, but also had the opportunity to explore their own creative skills. An inspiring day where Argentinian art was brought to life in the classroom!

Culture Day Japan - The team tried their hand at martial arts
This week the focus was on Japanese martial arts as the Japan team got an introduction to both karate and sumo wrestling.
Our former colleague Annemette visited the school to teach the students karate. Here they learnt basic techniques and a 'kata' - a sequence of movements that requires both precision and focus.
Afterwards, it was time for a somewhat heavier discipline - sumo wrestling. Wearing inflatable sumo suits, the students competed in the ring and had to push their opponent out or down. The matches offered both excitement and lots of laughs as the spectators cheered from the sidelines.
A fun and active day where students got a little insight into Japan's rich martial arts traditions!

End-of-term exams at Ranum
From Monday 17 to Thursday 20 February, term exams will be held. Good luck to all students!

Headmaster's column
Dear reader,
I don't understand a sniff of young people's need for - snuff. But I do recognise the excitement and curiosity about what adults tell them is not good or healthy. This week, the students got a good introduction to two young people's challenges with snus and addiction - at eye level. It is a problem in "all" schools / efterskoler that "secret" groups arise around the exciting forbidden - snus or wapes. In the teenage years, snus or other banned substances are not only a health problem, but also a risk of getting stuck in an unhealthy community that stigmatises the young person in an often unwanted role and situation towards other students and adults.
The only way to "open" a way out, and for the individual to make their own choices, is to open up dialogue and education. We have less visible challenges with snus this year, and it's definitely because we are working at eye level around the problem and in collaboration with both the student and the parents, but it requires many resources.
Next week we have final exams. On Monday evening we have invited you to a efterskole hypnosis show, which guarantees a good laugh and a lot of unexpected "harmless experiences".
Have a great weekend.
