AFS students, Sponsor race, Profile course, Turkish Pasta and DJ workshop

Dear reader,

Another eventful week has passed at Ranum Efterskole, filled with new experiences, fellowship and exciting activities. We've welcomed our new AFS students who are now part of our international community, and we've seen an impressive commitment from the students who ran to raise money for animal welfare in Namibia.

At the same time, the students have been introduced to the upcoming profile subjects, where they will soon immerse themselves in new interests and communities. In the kitchen, we have focused on Turkish cuisine in World Cooking, and the DJ team visited Foxybeat to try out professional sound equipment.

Read this week's newsletter where we share the many experiences and communities that make Ranum Efterskole special!

Welcome to our new AFS students

A new group from AFS has just arrived at Ranum Efterskole after an exciting trip around Europe. The students from Thailand and India will spend the next month with us, becoming part of efterskole life and our international community.

During their stay, they will experience Danish culture up close, make new friendships and share their own traditions with our students. This exchange creates a unique opportunity for cross-cultural learning, where both our guests and our current students gain new perspectives and insights.

We look forward to welcoming them and look forward to a month filled with experiences, community and new friendships.

If you want to get even more involved in international exchange programmes, you can become a contact family for an international efterskoleelev.

Running for a good cause: Students raised money for Wildlife Conservation

This week, the students from the Namibia - Wildlife Conservation culture class set themselves an important goal. Together with their teachers, they took part in a sponsored run to raise money for the N/a'an ku sê Wildlife Sanctuary in Namibia. Each lap they ran was sponsored and all funds raised go directly to support wildlife rescue work and a local hospital in Namibia.

The students showed great commitment and dedication, both in their efforts on the track and in their support of the important cause they are working on in the classroom. This race was not only a physical challenge, but also a powerful reminder of how taking action can make a real difference in the world.

While travelling to Namibia, students will experience animal protection work up close and contribute directly to projects in the field. The fundraising is part of their preparation and emphasises the strong sense of community that comes from working together for a cause that reaches far beyond school boundaries.

A big thank you to everyone who supported the race - students, teachers and sponsors alike. It's initiatives like this that show how efterskolelivet can help create both community and global engagement.

Introduction to profile subjects: Students get ready for new challenges

On Tuesday, students were given an introduction to the many exciting profile subjects they can choose after Easter. They walked around and listened to presentations from teachers who presented the different options and gave an insight into what awaits them in the upcoming profile course period.

At Ranum Efterskole, the profile subjects are much more than just teaching - they create strong communities and allow students to immerse themselves in their interests, challenge themselves and develop new skills. Whether it's adventure, sailing, esports, music or gastronomy, there's something for everyone, and common to all subjects is that they bring students and teachers together for unique experiences and projects.

After Easter, not only the profile subjects will begin, but also a new period of activity subjects where students will have the opportunity to try out new leisure activities. We look forward to seeing which subjects the students choose and how they will take part in the many exciting challenges ahead.

World Cooking: Taste of the world

This week, World Cooking offered a taste experience from Turkey. On Tuesday, Turkish cuisine was on the menu, where the students tried their hand at making Turkish pasta from scratch.

World Cooking is a regular part of the week at Ranum Efterskole, where students get the opportunity to try out dishes from different cultures. It's not only an educational experience in the kitchen, but also a way to bring students closer together through cooking together and experiencing new flavours.

The food was enjoyed together and it was yet another reminder of how gastronomy can help build cultural understanding and community. We are already looking forward to next week's dish!

The DJ team in action at Foxybeat

On Friday 28 February, our DJ team had the exciting opportunity to visit Foxybeat and Profox ApS. Here they learnt how mobile discos work in practice and got to try out some of the best DJ equipment in the industry.

Students got a hands-on experience where they tested mixing consoles, experimented with sound effects and gained insight into what it takes to create a professional sound experience.

It was an inspiring day where theory and practice merged - maybe this was the start of a DJ career for some of the students!

Thanks to Foxybeat and Profox ApS for welcoming us.

Shrovetide at Ranum Efterskole

Shrovetide was celebrated with lots of laughter, colourful costumes and, of course, barrel making! The students went all out with creative costumes and competed to become cat king and queen. The atmosphere was great with festive music, candy rain and a strong sense of community.

Thank you for a fantastic evening filled with traditions, fun and fellowship!

Headmaster's column

Dear reader,

Shrovetide, where we beat the "cat out of the barrel", is pretty much only a tradition in Denmark and although relatively few students chose to participate, it was a party with laughter and laughter and of course cat kings and queens.

Shrovetide was originally a celebration of getting ready to fast for Easter, but that's not exactly what our students are getting ready for now. Since November, students and teachers have been emptying their school bags to gain insight into the culture, ways of life and challenges of the country and continent they will be visiting.

The cultural journey is a dream come true for most students, arousing anxiety, curiosity and a longing for adventure. At the same time, it is a great test of maturity and personal development that requires courage and the desire to meet other young people with different backgrounds, traditions and perspectives. It will put the individual's life experiences into play and will open their eyes to the fact that the world is much bigger than the small bubble we come from in Denmark. One goal of the cultural journeys is to find communities across cultures, to share experiences, dreams and challenges with people who may think and live differently. Another goal is to dive into local challenges around sustainability and ways of life. We have started a video documentary project called Meet The Locals, where students in small teams will document "what matters" to local young people, what they think about the world and life. We hope that the material can be compiled into a video installation across all the journeys, so that the world's diversity can also be experienced at eye level across 19 countries and 5 continents.

Last week we were in the media about the Wellbeing Commission's recommendation to regulate the travelling activities of independent schools. This could be understood to mean that travelling is no longer allowed, but fortunately this is not the case and we will not stop sending young people out into the world, and we will work to ensure that there is no political regulation that will limit teenagers' longing and dreams of exploring the world.

Travelling is living - and you'd have to be extremely regulation-averse to think you can take that dream away from young people, but of course we must work to give everyone the best access to adventure. We do that at Ranum too!
