Previous Cultural subjectsIn the wake of Odysseus - Sailing through Greek culture from ancient to modern times
GREECE
We combine cultural subjects and the profile subject Sailing when we sail in a modern sailboat in the wake of Odysseus. The cultural journey to Greece can be based on ancient Greece and we can visit Odysseus' island Ithaca in the Ionian Sea, where we can hike up to Odysseus' castle. Along the way we can visit the islands of Levkas, Scorpios, Meganesi and Kefalonia. We anchor in the small harbours and bays, visit the local markets and taste the local specialities.
The lessons
During the cultural studies programme in December-March, we will of course be studying Greek history and modern society in various themes that the students themselves will decide on. We will contact different schools and institutions in the Ionian Sea and in Athens, and if possible we will organise meetings with locals along the way. We will also learn about sailing a boat, navigation, safety and trim of sails, etc. If you are interested in taking a certificate of proficiency, it will be possible to complete the course in the spring.
PRACTICAL INFO
On the cruise you'll learn how to sail a big boat, navigate and live on board. We'll go fishing and free-diving in shallow waters in the azure bays. On land we'll visit olive farms and hopefully make contact with some local schools and young people so we can also learn about life for young people in modern Greece.
THE JOURNEY ITSELF
We can decide to sail for a week or 2 weeks. One idea is to sail the first week and then in the second week move towards Athens, where we spend 3-4 days. En route from the Ionian Sea, we can visit Mount Olympus on Pelepones, where the modern Olympic Games were founded in ancient times. We have the opportunity to visit the Oracle of Delphi in the mountains before landing in Athens. In Athens we can either stay in a hostel or rent a boat to stay on board. Athens has several must-see sights: the Acropolis, the temple of the Greek gods and the large national museum, which houses amazing exhibitions of Greek culture and art. But we'll also explore daily life and youth culture in Athens. We have the opportunity to meet young people from a Greek international high school and hopefully we can do some activities together, perhaps sailing on a rented boat. On the sailing trip and especially in Athens, it will be possible for us to explore several of the UN's global goals. It is obvious to work with the marine environment, sustainable tourism, food and local production, unique ecosystems, etc.
