Surfing - California

Category
Cultural profile 2022

Surfing in California is a student-driven proposal. The students themselves are therefore very much co-creators of this course.

Students learn basic and necessary skills related to surfing. Some are taught at school, others we have to get water in our hair to try out. We do that out in Cold Hawaii. We will also address relevant socio-economic and cultural issues in our lessons.

In May, the team will travel to California, where they will surf and test their own insight into cultural differences and similarities.

The summer season rarely guarantees the best surfing in the northern hemisphere, so not in California, with mostly beginners or longboarders, the team should still have a lot of good and fun hours on the water.

The trip

  • Surfing
  • Find out about the history and cultural influence of American surfing on life on the California West Coast - including music.
  • Meet and interact with local young people, both around the surf, and possibly in connection with school visits or club life.

The lessons

The starting point of the course will be the history of California, the history of American surfing and the cultural influence on life on the California West Coast - including music.

The next important element of teaching is that students should be active co-creators of the subject and the journey. They will help to prioritise the studies and activities to be carried out in Denmark and on the trip, and may also help to arrange accommodation.

We will also test the claim that the American way of life differs from the Danish way of life. This concerns everything from family life, norms and traditions, schooling, and not least leisure life.

As promised in the above, students also learn basic and necessary skills related to surfing. Some we learn at school, others we have to get water in our hair to try out. We do that out in Cold Hawaii.

UN SDGs

The primary focus of the subject is these two:

  • Goal 14: Life below water
  • Goal 10 Reduce inequality

However, it would be unavoidable not also to deal with:

  • Objective 15 Life on land
  • Goal 13: Climate action

Corona: Restrictions, rules etc.

Common vaccines

For all types of travel to the USA, it is recommended that you be vaccinated against Diphtheria-Tetanus. In addition, persons at risk of infection with hepatitis A or B viruses should consider vaccinations against these. (https://www.sikkerrejse.dk/vaccinationer/puerto-rico/)

Important about Covid-19

Is California (ed.) reopening for international visitors?

Yes. But CDC travel requirements are still in effect, which means all air passengers to the U.S. are required to have a negative COVID-19 test result or documentation of recovery before they can board a flight to the United States.

Before traveling, familiarize yourself with local guidelines and regulations for all of the destinations you plan to visit. Please reference Visit California's Travel Alerts for more information and links.

Do I need to be vaccinated or provide a negative COVID-19 test to fly into California from other states?

No. California recommends travelers be vaccinated before visiting, but it is not mandatory.

Mask wearing is still mandatory for everyone in the following settings:

  • While taking any form of public transit (planes, buses, trains, rideshares, cable cars, etc.)
