Cultural classes, a musical, a spooky dance show and an even spookier Halloween basement.

Dear reader,

It's been another fantastic week. From an amazing Halloween themed dance show to a great workshop about our upcoming cultural studies term. The students have also experienced the musical Asger Jorn and finally got a good scare in our Halloween Dungeon. You should especially watch the video from our dance show. You can see that and more in this week's newsletter. Have a great weekend!

Mellemfolkeligt samvirke

Monday started with a presentation for the students from Mellemfolkeligt Samvirke and a workshop on culture and what culture is. The students actively participated in the presentation with various exercises, where they also had to reflect on what culture was for them.

Choice of cultural subjects

This week has been characterised by culture, with the start of the students' choice of cultural subjects. It all started with a presentation from Mellemfolkeligt Samvirke to guide the students to the right choice for them. Then there was a fair where the students could hear short presentations and ask questions about the different cultural subjects.

On Wednesday there was a follow-up workshop where students could get a more detailed and in-depth presentation of the subjects.

P1 Music ended the first profile-subject period with an amazing concert!

The music students spent the first period studying The Beatles, both history and music, and travelling in Liverpool, Manchester and Wales. To round off the subject the P1 Music crew performed a concert in front of the entire school.

After having spent months practising and perfecting 10 different Beatles songs, ranging from "Maybe I'm Amazed" to "Get Back", and carefully preparing outfits, setting up a stage and meticulous sound testing, the two bands were ready to perform.

The concert was enjoyed by both students and staff and was a great experience!

Students decorate the school with pumpkins for Halloween

The students have been very good at making pumpkins in the run-up to Halloween. It's close to the full range of emotions that the students have been carving into pumpkins. Maybe it reminds the students of the emojis they use in everyday life on social media?

Musical about Asger Jorn

The students were full of impressions after their visit to Jysk Musikteater, where they experienced the magnificent musical about Asger Jorn. The story of the daring artist who fought for his art and freedom captured the students' interest. They were particularly moved by the great emotions expressed through the music, singing and dancing. After the performance, many chatty students discussed the importance of art, but also the more personal dilemmas that Jorn faced. It was clear that the musical had stirred many thoughts and emotions in the students.

Halloween dance show

The students danced their way to big applause!" With sweat and smiles on their faces, the students presented an impressive Halloween dance show. Hours of practice and creativity resulted in a show that was both entertaining and well executed. The students' dedication and talent shone through and they received high praise from teachers and students alike.

Watch the show on youtube. (Click! It's actually pretty good).

Ranum Halloween

If there had been a sign down to our basement in Næsby, it might well have sounded like this:

Warning: This basement is NOT for the faint of heart! If you're afraid of spiders, ghosts and everything in between, turn back now! But if you dare to challenge your own limits and get your heart rate up, then our Halloween dungeon is for you. Guaranteed to make you sweat and scream!

The students were visiting Næsby for Halloween, where some of our talented teachers had transformed our otherwise rather boring basement into anything but boring.

Headmaster's column

Dear reader,

It's been a spooky - cosy week where we started in the universe of dreams and fairy tales with presentations of Cultural Studies projects and travelling the world, and ended with a really scary Halloween night. During the week, we have held two Cultural Studies presentations and the students have submitted their 1st, 2nd and 3rd priorities. The presentations of the more than 25 ideas for cultural subjects have been characterised by great engagement and the whole school has been buzzing with energy. The selection process creates a democratic experience where students and staff have something at stake. It's a big choice to choose Culture and travel, but it's also an exercise in dealing with uncertainty and making a conscious decision, which helps to make the individual more robust.

In the coming week, we'll also be focusing on democracy in a big way with the US election. And then we start the TEBO programme with two days out of the house at schools and workplaces all over the world, and then comes the Christmas weekend, where the students decorate rooms, hallways and common areas. On the same weekend is Sunday, Grandparents' Day. We can't wait!

Best regards and have a nice weekend

It happens:

In the coming weeks, we'll be running several programmes in class about the US election, and on election day and night, students will have the opportunity to "be there" late into the night.

TEBO
This week we have kick-started TEBO (Thematic Vocational Bridge Building and Compulsory Assignment). TEBO runs over several days at the school and 2+3 days at different youth education programmes and company visits. The purpose of TEBO is to make bridge building more relevant to students and give them insight into the many different industries or "worlds" where you can find an exciting education and a job. TEBO is therefore not just about meeting a vocational school and an upper secondary school, but instead it is about inspiring students to dare to explore different educational paths. We will follow the project in the newsletter during the month of November.

New 10th grade initiative
On 8 October, the government published a proposal for an education reform from 2030. The proposal means that virtually all young people will have access to one of three upper secondary school programmes. In order to ensure a sufficient student base for the new vocational and professional upper secondary education programme (EPX), the municipal 10th grade offerings will be closed, but 10th grade at efterskoler will be allowed or "exempted". At the same time, the government is increasing funding so that more "vulnerable" young people can get a scholarship to attend efterskole. Overall, we must commend the government for embarking on a much-needed renewal of secondary education. At the same time, we urge everyone with political interest and influence to ensure that the efterskole year in 10th grade is not detached from the young people's education programme, but is seen as a valuable educational experience that also "counts" towards their chances of being admitted to one of the three upper secondary schools.

It's getting really dark in the evenings now, and lights have been installed on all the paths around the school. But in the local area the roads are dark and we strongly encourage all students to at least wear reflectors on their coats and have both front and rear lights on their bikes.

Have a great weekend!
