13 Dec Light in the dark at Ranum Efterskole
Dear reader,
This week there has been a focus on bringing light into the darkness at efterskolen. Both physically with the beautiful Lucia procession, and metaphorically with the money the school has raised for the Christmas market, which can now go to various charitable organisations the school supports - both monetarily and with volunteer work. The school's principal Olav, who has carried the torch for Ranum Efterskole, was also highlighted when he recently celebrated his 20th anniversary at the school.
Christmas market for a good cause
At this year's Christmas market, the school, in collaboration with the students and their families, managed to raise over DKK 50,000 to support the charitable projects the school supports in Nepal, Namibia, Malaysia, India and Argentina.
Below you can see some examples of these. Thank you so much for your support!
Lucia parade at Ranum
Friday morning started with assembly and a beautiful Lucia procession performed by a group of students, the big lights were switched off and the room was filled with candles, singing and the beautiful procession. Experience the assembly and the beautiful procession here.
10+ Climbing: Boulder Setting Workshop
Climbing isn't only about getting to the top. It is about team working, creativity and teamwork. Last Sunday, we set up new boulders. Watch the full video here.
Basketball in Randers
On Thursday, 40 students travelled to see the match between Randers and Svendborg. Filled with energy on an evening with a great experience, the students saw Svendborg win the otherwise exciting match. They also experienced Randers' own super talented cheerleaders, who could go all the way up to three levels!
Olav 20th anniversary
On Friday last week, the school's principal Olav Storm was surprised with a celebration of his 20th anniversary at Ranum Efterskole College.
Olav has been leading the school as principal since 2004. Much has evolved and changed since then, and the school has steadily grown year after year. Read more about the school's history since 2004 here The link.
Olav says:
"Thank you for the gift, both the gift voucher for a dinner with Mette and the photo.
I think you can see that it came as a complete surprise to me. I hadn't even given it a second thought.
And it's rare that I'm surprised to the extent that it did well!"
International School Canada
Ranum Efterskole students who successfully complete their Grade 10 IGCSE will have the opportunity to pursue an IB Diploma and a Canadian British Columbia High School Diploma
at UNISUS. Both graduation diplomas are recognised and accepted by esteemed universities and colleges worldwide. Read more here.
AFS students in Denmark
In January, 10 young people from Argentina, India and New Zealand will visit us through our collaboration with AFS. They will stay at the school and participate in the activities. They would also really like to experience Danish culture a little closer and we hope that there could be some more of you and your families who would like to invite them home for the weekend from 17 to 19 January? If you would like to hear more, please contact me at bp@ranumefterskole.dk or Mette Mahoney at mnm@ranumefterskole.dk.
Headmaster's column
Dear reader,
It's Friday the 13th, but luckily it's December and time for Christmas cheer. The week started with last weekend's student party and it is our impression that it was a great party. During the week, Christmas cheer has crept into all the houses and the evening mail is full of sweet parcels.
The week ended with the Sct. Lucia procession at the morning assembly. It's a beautiful tradition, and when you've been a part of it since the school started 20 years ago, it's one of those moments when your mind goes back to the beginning and follows the student teams year by year. In the first years of the school and in the mid-2000s, there were a lot of goth students in the parade, later boys and girls went together. Today we were back to the bright girl voices in an all-girl parade in white dresses. It gives food for thought and unfortunately there is a new problem that some students did not want to participate because they were unsure of the other students' reactions. It's a long way from the goth students to the insecurity we experience today about standing out. This group of students is the first generation born into the age of smart phone cameras, and even though they are "world champions" on social media, it also creates an insecurity about always being exposed without wanting to be. We're working to address this and we look forward to restarting everyday life after the winter holidays with a mobile-free week for everyone.
In the last week before Christmas, we have a busy programme culminating in the big Christmas Ball on Thursday evening and a joint Christmas party on Friday both in Ranum Church and in the banqueting hall, and Santa Claus might show up in the very last hour before Ranum Bussen takes the students home for Christmas holidays.
