10 Jan Happy New Year - First 2 trips of the year, skiing in Sweden and culture in Prague.
Dear Reader - Happy New Year!
The Christmas and New Year holidays ended with students and staff going on the two winter community trips to ski in Sweden and to culture in the city of Prague. The purpose of the trips is to socialise and meet new students in the student body, as well as meet new impressions.
Sweden
In Sweden, the students stayed in cabins and cooked their own dinner, they went to ski school 2×2 hours a day, but the weather has been a bit tricky with lots of snow and wind. Fortunately, there have been no major injuries and we hope that everyone will make it home in one piece tomorrow, Friday around 3pm.
Prague
In Prague we really pursued this goal with cultural activities such as medieval city walks, art and ballet in the impressive State Opera Theatre. We also had a great friendship school visit to Archbishops Gymnasium, the students hit it off immediately and it was a new experience for most of the team to meet a real pen pal. We also spent a whole day in Theresienstadt, where we got a sense of the unimaginable cruelty and inhumanity that characterised the lives of Jews and political prisoners in the Nazi labour camp and ghetto.
Today we visited the Astronomical Tower and had a guided tour 8-10 metres below the street in the original medieval part of the city, which has been excavated. Next, we visited the Museum of the Communist Period from 1968-89.
It is education on a very serious theme of oppression and lack of freedoms.
The students themselves drew parallels to Russia's invasion of Ukraine and we had serious conversations about standing up to autocrats and oppressors.
The journey ends with cake and cocoa at Cafe Louvre, where we experience the atmosphere from when Einstein and Kafka held discussion clubs here.
We leave Prague tonight and expect to arrive in Ranum around noon on Friday.
