Casino weekend, hunting licence, AFS night and football match

Dear reader,

Another week has passed. In the middle of the week we had a great cultural evening with our AFS students who had a farewell party. It was a very authentic and touching evening where we learnt about each other and different cultures. Some students also attended a hunting licence course where they had to learn how to handle game. Football match, lectures and much more, read all about it in this week's edition of the newsletter.

Casino Weekend: An Enchanting Evening!

Imagine 130 young people turning Ranum Efterskole College into a mini-Las Vegas for a weekend. This Saturday night was unlike any other - it was CASINO NIGHT!

Poker Face & Wild Bets

The highlight of the evening was undoubtedly No Limit Texas Hold 'em. The students competed with a poker face worthy of a World Series of Poker competitor. Some were so deep in concentration that you could hear a pin drop, while others were laughing so hard that their bluff was called in an instant!

The magic of the roulette wheel

At the roulette table, the atmosphere was electric with anticipation and excitement. Red and black chips flew across the table as students shouted and cheered with every spin. "BLACK 17!" resounded throughout the hall.

But it wasn't all fun and games. Behind the façade, there was valuable learning that students were practising:

  • Think strategically
  • Understanding psychology
  • Risk management
  • Collaboration as a community

Conclusion? Casino Weekend was more than just gambling; it was a night filled with laughter, friendship and unforgettable moments.

P.S. Who actually won? The answer is simple: We all did!

Hunting licence

Ranum Efterskole College offers a wide range of subjects, including hunting licences, where students learn about the many aspects of hunting. As part of this training, students were recently given a practical lesson in handling game, including pheasants.

Michael, an experienced instructor, led this hands-on session with great expertise. He demonstrated the process of trimming the pheasant so it can be frozen or prepared for use in cooking.

After the thorough briefing, the students were given the opportunity to try the process themselves. This is an important experience to gain if and when you find yourself in the situation where you have hunted game. For example, a pheasant.

AFS evening

Ranum Efterskole College recently organised an AFS night, marking a month's stay for exchange students from four different countries: India, Argentina, New Zealand and Australien. This event filled the school with a diversity of cultural experiences and gave the other students the opportunity to explore new worlds.

Argentinian music and football culture

Argentina took centre stage with three concerts that brought South American rhythm and energy to efterskolen. A special attraction was the opportunity to sign an Argentinian football shirt, which excited many students and provided a unique insight into the country's football culture.

Indian dance and traditions

The Indian students contributed a colourful and fascinating display of traditional Indian dance. This performance gave the audience a vivid impression of India's rich cultural heritage and deep dance traditions.

New Zealand and Australien present their culture

New Zealand and Australien each had a stand showcasing their unique national culture and values. New Zealand's stand emphasised the country's core concepts of kindness, ingenuity and openness. Students could learn about Kiwi culture, which values humility and global awareness.

Australien's stand provided insight into the country's diverse culture, which is heavily influenced by Anglo-Celtic Western culture but has also developed its own distinctive characteristics. Visitors could discover Australien's rich sports culture, music scene and the unique outdoor lifestyle that characterises the country.

Cultural journey of discovery The event served as a platform for cultural exchange and understanding. Ranum Efterskole students had the opportunity to experience and interact with cultures from four different continents, which has undoubtedly enriched their worldview and understanding of global diversity. This type of event is in line with Ranum Efterskole College's core values, which emphasise diversity, difference and learning in communities.

Cultural exchange through footballArgentina vs. Brasilien

Cultural exchange through football

The day began with a joint training session where students from both cultural subjects participated in exercises and drills that reflected both the Argentinian and Brazilian approaches to football. This allowed students to experience the subtle differences in playing style and technique that characterise these footballing nations.

Exciting matches

The highlight was two intense battles between the two cultural subjects:

  • Girls' match: The Brazilian team prevailed in a close match that showed the technical finesse and creativity often associated with Brazilian football.
  • Boys' match: The Argentinian team took home the win, possibly inspired by their national team's recent success against Brasilien.

More than just sport

This football day was more than just a sporting event. It served as a platform for cultural exchange where students could experience and appreciate the rich football cultures of both Argentina and Brasilien. The event reflected the passion and importance that football has in both countries' cultures.

The day ended in an atmosphere of community and mutual respect, with students celebrating their shared love of the game, regardless of nationality or cultural background. This type of event at Ranum Efterskole College emphasises the school's commitment to promoting intercultural understanding and cooperation through sports and cultural activities.

Headmaster's column

Dear reader,

An essential part of efterskole life is forming a community. A diverse community where there is room for everyone - from those who struggle to find a friend to those who are swimming in friends.
It's fundamentally about recognising and respecting the other person and being open to the fact that we have different strengths and that life can unfold very differently for each of us.
A number of dance classes experienced this in the very authentic theatre play CALL ME JUST SNOWFLAKE. In the play, a group of young people bravely and honestly share their personal stories about how they have felt stress and pressure in their lives and how they cope with it all. The purpose of the stories was to understand and discuss young people's unhappiness against the backdrop of the performance and perfection culture that today leads to stress, loneliness and anxiety among many young people.

The great thing about a large school like Ranum is that every day we experience how students meet new faces and have to introduce themselves. This creates the opportunity to continuously redefine your own self-image and not be trapped in the "social status box" that we humans can be hard to place each other in in a matter of seconds. This ongoing redefinition of identity and self-narrative provides good conditions for being open to each other both in class and in the rooms. At this point in the year, many students dare to reach beyond themselves and include a roommate or friend who may be struggling with the social or academic aspects of efterskolelife, heartbreak or homesickness. But there are also students who may feel lonely in a certain role, maybe you have to appear tougher than you really want to be. That's why we address the social dynamics and community in the contact groups and in everyday life, so that the "locked" roles and groups are challenged and developed. We do this by insisting that the students pay attention to difference and diversity, for example in intercultural encounters with young people from other cultures and with young people from very different environments.
It's not easy, but it's necessary!

We wish everyone a very good weekend.
