A week filled with memories, community and adventure

Dear reader,

This week has been a very special one at Ranum Efterskole College - a week filled with reflection, community and great goodbyes. Today, the first students have set off on their cultural journeys, and over the next few days the rest of the teams will be travelling the world. Soon, students will explore new cultures, meet people from other countries and take their learning into the real world - from city life in Tokyo to the savannahs of Namibia.

But the week has also offered other experiences. We celebrated a beautiful memorial service for Rasmus Søndergaard Rask, enjoyed cosy moments in the kitchen with a contact group baking sugar cookies, and experienced a music box surprise with its very own version of SOS by Scarlet Pleasure.

Follow along in this newsletter as we look back on the special moments of the week - and send our students off on their big adventure!

Cultural Journeys 2025 - The world is waiting for us!

It's finally time! This week, our students are travelling the world on their cultural journeys, where for the next two weeks they will experience, learn and meet people from different cultures. These trips are an important part of Ranum Efterskole College - here, the world becomes the largest classroom, where students gain new perspectives on both the world and themselves through encounters with local youth, nature, history and society.

This year we're travelling to 19 destinations across the globe where students will immerse themselves in culture, nature and community. Whether they're experiencing everyday life with a host family in Texas, trekking in the Nepalese Himalayas, restoring coral reefs in the Maldives or exploring the vibrant life of Tokyo, they'll return home with invaluable experiences and memories for life.

Culture subject of the year: Destinations and experiences

Here's a brief overview of some of the exciting experiences students can look forward to:

Argentina - Experience the rhythms of tango, the passion of football and Argentine culture from city to pampas.

Bali - Immerse yourself in Balinese culture, volcano trekking and meeting local communities.

Brazil - From Rio's city life to rainforest adventures and sustainable conservation projects.

Canada - A road trip through spectacular landscapes with a focus on nature and the environment.

Coral Restoration - Students work with marine biology and rebuild coral reefs in the Maldives.

Costa Rica - Rainforest wildlife, volcanoes and sustainable initiatives.

Hawaii - Combining culture, nature and adventure in a tropical paradise.

Japan - A journey through tradition and technology, from temples to neon-lit cities.

China - Students visit a twinning school and immerse themselves in Chinese history and society.

Malaysia - Focus on education and intercultural encounters with local students.

Morocco - From bustling markets in Marrakech to surf and nomadic life in the desert.

Namibia - Safari, conservation and encounters with locals in one of Africa's most fascinating countries.

Nepal - Trekking in the Himalayas and insights into Buddhist and Hindu ways of life.

Panama - Cultural encounters with the Guna Yala people and sustainable projects in the rainforest.

South Africa - Safari, Cape Town history and working with local schools.

South Korea - A unique encounter with Korean youth and an in-depth experience of both tradition and K-pop culture.

Thailand - Jungle adventures, meeting local schools and the beauty of tropical islands.

USA (East & West Road Trip) - From big cities to desert landscapes, from history to pop culture.

Texas Homestay - Students stay with American host families and experience life in the southern United States first-hand.

Even though students are travelling far away, we at home don't have to miss out on their adventures! We encourage all parents, siblings, friends of the school and other interested parties to follow along. You can follow the students' journeys on Facebook and Instagram, where each team regularly shares photos and updates from their experiences. Each travelling team has its own Facebook page where daily highlights will be posted, while the school's official Instagram will also have stories and posts along the way.

We can't wait to see you follow along online, and most importantly, we can't wait to bring home some amazing stories that will live on long after the suitcases are unpacked. We wish all our students and teachers an amazing journey - we look forward to hearing about their adventures when they return home!

In memory of Rasmus Søndergaard Rask

On Tuesday 11 March 2025, a touching 5-minute silence was held at Ranum Efterskole in honour of a former student who sadly passed away from cancer in 2024. A memorial with his name has been engraved as a lasting reminder of his time at the school. Several teachers, including the principal Olav Storm Johannsen, attended the silent memorial service where everyone gathered to honour and remember the young student.

Baking in the contact group and a musical surprise

This week, one of the contact groups was busy in the kitchen baking sugar cookies. Stirring, moulding and baking - with varying degrees of success! As the pictures show, some of the cookies tended to stick together a bit, but the flavour was definitely not bad. The most important thing was the fun, the teamwork and, of course, tasting the finished result.

At the same time - in a completely different context - there was a little musical experience when a band started singing SOS by Scarlet Pleasure. A slightly unexpected, but quite entertaining performance that brought a smile to the faces of those listening.

Two very different activities, but both examples of how small moments of fun and community happen in everyday life at Ranum Efterskole College!

Headmaster's column

Dear reader,

This weekend, 525 young people and more than 60 adults are travelling on the big cultural trips to 19 destinations. It will be a new chapter in the young people's lives and for us "experienced" travellers it will also be the start of a new joint project that we have named "Meet The Locals".

A project to gather a picture of the world's young people, their views on life's most important issues and their own dreams. We hope that the project succeeds and that we can compile a video reportage that can inspire and provide an understanding of the world's diversity.

It's natural to think that this is an uncertain time to be travelling the world, and we will certainly be well looked after in various airports and countries! But we know from experience that young people pave the way and are met with kindness and curiosity wherever they go.
We also know that it means a lot to the young people we meet around the world at friendship schools and randomly on our way, because they also become curious about our lives and perhaps gain the courage to pursue their dreams and hopes of exploring the world.

I wish all staff and students a safe cultural studies journey out into the world and hope that the echoes leave a lifelong educational imprint.

Med venlig hilsen / Best regards

Olav Storm Johannsen
Principal / Headmaster

We wish everyone a very good weekend.
