01 Nov Halloween, Students' Travel Stories & REC's Friends
Dear reader,
Autumn is creeping up on us, and as the seasons change, so does schooling at Ranum. The cultural subjects are replacing the profile subjects, next week we will have new activity subjects and in this way the new communities of interest are flourishing. This is both a democratic process and an important part of after-school life at Ranum that we are proud of.
This week's newsletter takes you through a week that included a spooky Thursday night filled with costumes and face painting, the announcement of PVA participants, a new association, the start of cultural classes and everything else that made for a great afterschool week. We hope you'll read along, because there are lots of great stories.
Halloween Cheer
"What are we doing tonight?", "Now tell us what's happening at 5pm". The students were curious and excited about dinner on Thursday. And with good reason. The night watchmen had prepared for days to take the students through a Scare House in the basement below the kitchen, which they had to survive before dinner was served. The basement was filled with scary obstacles. The last words before the door opened were "...make sure you're not in the back". And then it was just a matter of getting into the dark. Below you can hopefully get a sense of what the contact groups experienced.
After dinner and the spooky lap, there was a competition to decide the best dressed. See a few pictures here.
Good memories from the profile trips
We now have a photo bank full of travel photos, videos and articles. This is, of course, because we collect the stories from the trips when the students return home. This gives a unique insight into how the students themselves experience the trips, because they are involved in communicating the trips themselves. We also hold a competition to celebrate the best pictures, videos and articles in the big Pictures, Videos and Articles Competition. The participants, you can see.

Kulturfagsstart
The first lessons of cultural studies were spent on Monday and Wednesday on learn-to-know games and various exercises. In addition, many have already started planning the trips themselves, and researching options on what can be done is also part of the lessons.
Coral Restoration at trade fair in the Netherlands
Speaking of cultural studies. A team of Coral Restoration students and teachers have travelled all the way to the Netherlands to take part in a major fair on underwater sustainability. And that hits the bulls-eye in terms of what cultural studies is all about. The purpose of the trip is both to learn more about the topic and, of course, to support coral restoration with our presence. If you want to read more about what we've been up to in the past, you might want to check out the associated Facebook page and the cultural studies page here:
The Golden Horns return
Earlier this week we reported that our much-loved copies of the Golden Horns had gone missing. It was a funny story with a historical twist and a trip across the Kattegat. Now they have returned, and once we have built a new, and more secure, mount for them, they will be put back in their place.

Karaoke Night
We really have a lot of activities during a normal week. After-school life goes on around the clock, but there's always something fun going on in the evenings. For example, karaoke night.
Lecture Café
It may look a bit empty in the picture, but it hasn't been during the week. We've had a homework café, where students have had the chance to focus on the tasks that require concentration - and perhaps a helping hand.
Fantastic last sailing
We've finished one of the videos we filmed last week. There's another one coming soon, made by Erik Bjerre. Until then, you can hear a bit about what it's like to have sailing at Ranum here - from the students' point of view.
The podcast has landed
Thought time and talk time. That's what you can expect from the very first, brand new, Ranum Podcast. We'll be releasing it on Youtube first, but once we get the technicalities right, it'll also be available on Spotify, Itunes and wherever else you listen to podcasts. It's exciting, and it's a student-driven project. Yes, you almost have to hear it for yourself. It comes here.
The weekend and the week ahead
Tonight there are parent-teacher conferences, and there are likely to be many parents eager to hear how things are going. Tomorrow we'll be in the family room for Siblings Weekend. There is a fun programme planned which can be found on Facebook and the School Plan - have you remembered to sign up?
