Objectives and Values

Paragraph 4. The purpose of Ranum Efterskole College is to operate a self-governing, independent international boarding school within the framework of existing rules on private boarding schools in Denmark.

Paragraph 5. This obliges us to provide development for everyone through challenging activities in a safe setting, focusing on both the academic content and the personal well-being. Students are encouraged to maintain a balance between learning and a wide range of extra-curricular subjects and activities, with sporting and cultural achievements valued equally. It is a primary objective to ensure that students develop a healthy and quality based lifestyle.

Nature-sports are a concatenation of nature experience and sport in nature, in the wild. Nature becomes the learning environment, and sports the subject in which the student develop a set of general competencies and skills. Imagination is a general expression for creativity through an imaginative learning. Imagination is an educational process that provides insight into life, and puts the contemporaries in relief.

The school is obliged to provide classes in the compulsory subjects that are connected to the Danish 9th and 10th end of school examinations. The teaching of these subjects is in the context of the activities that are characteristic for the school, so that practice and theory are experienced coherently. It is a priority that each student receives the best possible exam in all subjects, both in the oral and in the written disciplines.

The everyday life of the efterskole should seek to create a 'free room' for the students' personal development and strengthen their social and democratic competences. The school must be an integral part of the local community and have close cooperation with relevant local educational institutions and associations.

Paragraph 6. The idea behind these focuses is that sports and imagination are seen as a key interface between creativity, art, culture, sports and nature. The school regard this interaction as a training and development process, in which the students ultimately will dare to seek own boundaries and to express themselves as an individual in the community.

It requires knowledge, imagination, courage and tolerance to navigate in a complex and ever-changing world. The interaction between nature sports and imagination creates a vibrant and spirited learning environment that can help to provide the individual with the social and academic skills that are needed for success in a dynamic global society.

Values
Ranum Efterskole College believes that the good life is to be found in an exchange between individuality and community, between challenge and consideration and between expression and tolerance. We value diversity. We emphasise learning – both individually and in communities. A good learning environment is characterised by welcoming surroundings, self-establishment and satisfaction in what you do.

We strive to create a framework in which students participate in decision-making, take responsibility for own personalised learning experience and personal development as well as interacting in our community. We believe that in order to prepare and empower our students to the complex and dynamic world, it is a necessity that they live, learn, challenge, experience and push themselves. It is our responsibility to provide the support and encouragement, to create the safe and trustworthy setting, and facilitate a vision of being able.

Moreover, we wish to demonstrate to our students what it means to be one among many, what it means to be an individual with own needs and dreams in a larger community and what it means to contribute to society.

Ranum Efterskole College is rooted in a modern 'Grundtvigsk' outlook, which means that we believe that the narrative e.g. story-telling creates a meaningful picture of past, present and future. An image in which the individual's narrative is important for creating one's own identity and from there matures into the world with curiosity and imagination as well as with empathy and accountability for own's actions. The narrative is a collection of moments from which the students will create his or her own meaningful stories in life.

Self-assessment and self-assessment plan 2023-24

Inclusion

At Ranum Efterskole College we understand the word in its broadest sense. Being inclusive means that we want to create a framework for diversity and for students from different backgrounds and needs, because we believe that it is in the interaction with others that you develop as a person. It is a criterion of success for us that all students benefit from the education received here and participate in the community, so that this year here will be of benefit for all of our students - both on a personal level and a professional level.
We are of the opinion that it is best to work with the students in the specific framework they are in at that specific moment - hence we do not have special needs classes, but instead seek integration and offer assistance in the instances they occur. This strategy and in extension work is under the responsibility of the teacher and is an on-going process during the whole school year. We have different levels in all of our academic subjects - in some up to 4 different levels in order to address and match the different levels of skills and competencies of students.

See inclusion status 2018 (pdf)

A plan

The inclusion initiatives for students in need of such are described in writing - in an individual plan - which is evaluated during the school year. Any support or pedagogical activities in relation to efforts made, are described in this plan.
Inclusion initiatives and plans for evaluation are always individual agreements between the school, the student in question and his/her parents.

Grades

The Danish and International grading scale
The Danish system has since 2006/2007 used the 7-point grading scale of grades from -3 to 12. This system was introduced to better correlate with international grading systems. In the international programme, the grading system of letters is used.

Passed/Not passed
In order to pass an exam in the Danish system, the student in question must achieve the grades 02, 4, 7, 10 or 12. This means that the student will not have passed an exam if 00 or -3 is achieved.

Descriptions of each grade
You will see a description for each grade in the Danish 7-point grading scale below and how these correlates to the international system.
The grading scale is based on the ECTS system:

12 / A

For an excellent performance

The grade 12 is given for an excellent performance that demonstrates exhaustive achievement of the subject goals, with few to no mistakes.

10 / B

For a very good performance

The grade 10 is given for a very good performance that demonstrates comprehensive achievement of the subject goals with some minor mistakes.

7 / C

The good performance

The grade 7 is given for a good performance that demonstrates achievement of the subject goals, with some mistakes.

4 / D

The steady performance

The grade 4 is given for a fair performance that demonstrates a lesser degree of achieving the subject goals with several significant mistakes.

02 / E

The adequate performance

The grade 02 is given for the adequate performance that demonstrates the minimally acceptable achievement of the subject goals.

00 / Fx

The inadequate performance

The grade 00 is given for the inadequate performance that does not demonstrate an acceptable achievement of the subject goals.

-3 / F

The poor performance

The grade -3 is given for the completely unacceptable performance.

Our values put the individual at the center of his or her own life and in respect for the large community. The values point out how important it is that we as individuals understand how to develop as a human being in a global world - with the responsibility for the development of others as well as our own. And that we learn to set goals for ourselves and make the choices that can lead us to reach those goal. That we experience that there is a meaning to everythinbg we do and that we can contribute to a good life for those around us.

At REC we take this focus on core values very serious and have given the students and the employees the opportunity to take part in forming the content of the efterskole year, to the degree where everyone can suggest new profile subjects and be part of setting new goals in the everyday life.

2-3 times a year, we conduct a democratic election process, so that each persons ideas and goals are put into play in the big community. We also form concrete communities of practice with specific goals and interests. In this way we ensure that we are a contemporary school that keeps on developing in a dialogical collaboration with the students and with each others as colleagues, school board and school association.
