Profile subject P3Alpine Adventure - Off-piste Skiing/Snowboarding in Macedonia
DescriptionAlpine Adventure is an exciting profile course in our efterskole programme for students with a passion for off-piste skiing or snowboarding. This course is designed for the adventurer who wants to challenge themselves and explore the mountains in a unique way - without the use of ski lifts. We emphasise independence and community, as students work their way to the top of the mountains on their own. This is done either on randonee skis/splitboard with skins underneath.
Prerequisites: Students who wish to participate in Alpine Adventure must have a minimum of 6-8 weeks of skiing or snowboarding experience. This ensures that participants have a basic skill set and are able to handle challenging terrain. We want to create a group where everyone can benefit from the lessons and unique experiences. From a safety perspective, it is also important that students are experienced in skiing/snowboarding.
The lessonsBefore travelling to Macedonia, lessons will include physical training, snow safety, rescue techniques, Macedonian history and culture, as well as know-how about travelling in an alpine environment. Students will learn to understand and navigate the unpredictable terrain they will encounter off the conventional ski slopes, as well as gain an understanding of the country and the part of the world we are travelling in.
Travelling experienceThe journey will take us to three different destinations in Macedonia, where we will not only explore the mountains, but also delve into the history, culture and politics of the area. The visit to Ohrid, where the Cyrillic alphabet was created, gives us a cultural understanding of Macedonia's rich history. We'll also explore the border with Albania, which is patrolled by specially trained soldiers and dogs that are used to travelling and patrolling the mountains.
Culinary experiencesA key part of the Alpine Adventure is to experience Macedonian cuisine, which acts as a melting pot between Southern European and Middle Eastern flavours. Students will have the opportunity to taste local dishes and immerse themselves in the culinary diversity that characterises the region.
Alpine Adventure is not only a journey into the spectacular mountain landscape, but also an opportunity to develop skills, strengthen community and create memories that last a lifetime.
