Eating our way through the USA: culinary experiences to the max

 

Do you love food, glamour and a busy life? Then choose the cultural profile Gastronomy, Washington and New York if you're ready for a blast of a cultural experience, in two of America's coolest cities!

In Denmark we have some of the world's best restaurants, currently (year 2021) we actually occupy both the 1st and 2nd place of the world's best restaurants, will you help to keep that position. Then Gastronomy is a small step in the right direction.

If you want to help create food from scratch, food that stimulates all the senses and just generally cook fantastic food, then you should choose Gastronomy at Ranum Efterskole.

 

The Lessons

You will get through the basic skills of gastronomy, there will be both theoretical knowledge and practical work in the kitchen.

We will work with classic dishes as well as newer dishes, and we will try recipes from different parts of the world. We will also develop our own dishes.

We will work on themes such as:

  • Food from around the world
  • Commodity knowledge
  • Hygiene in the kitchen
  • Animal welfare - also in the kitchen
  • Molecular gastronomy
  • Special diet
  • Smørrebrød
  • Address
  • From land to table

In gastronomy we will also challenge your senses, both the taste and the visual. Teachers expect you to come to class with an open mind and not be afraid to try something new.

We will aim to deliver a finished product each time, but we may need to spend several training sessions on individual products. We will also go out and visit our suppliers in vegetables, fish, catering wholesaler. There will also be visits to restaurants and see how the work is done there.

 

The trip

We start in New York, and will later drive down to Washington D.C.

The trip will focus on both cultural and gastronomic experiences.

  • Show on Broadway
  • Harlem
  • Central Park
  • Madison Square Garden

 

Gastronomic experiences in New York:

  • Food Trucks on the Streets of New York
  • Janeway - Mexican in New York
  • Lombardy
  • Eileen's special cheesecakes
  • Berber Street Food
  • Meyers

After these experiences, we drive towards Washington.

  • White house

  • US Supreme Court

Corona: Restrictions, rules etc.

"Entry is prohibited for travellers who have not been fully vaccinated, with limited exceptions.

If you are fully vaccinated AND have either tested negative for COVID-19 or can show proof of having had COVID and recovered within 90 days (both proof of positive test and letter from doctor or health authority), you can fly to the US provided you have a valid ESTA or a valid visa. 

The Danish corona passport can be used as proof of completed vaccination and test results when entering the USA.

Certain travellers are exempt from the vaccination requirement, including children under 18 years of age, US citizens and permanent US residents. The full list of exemptions can be found in the White House announcement.
