Cultural studies, TravelSchool attendance - a human right for everyone
During this culture subject you will ontain an understanding of, how it is to live in a country like Malaysia, depending on the family's social status. This applies to our preparation, our trip and our reprocessing after the trip. You will be well equipped for a cultural encounter with lots of different people and you will be trained to pass on your knowledge from this encounter.
The goal of this trip is to teach and help out at a school for refugees in Malaysia, where the economic situation is vastly different from what we are used to at home. The School is being run exclusively by volunteers and the goal is to offer schooling to everyone, regardless of origin and social status. In this way, you will gain insight into an alternative form of schooling, but also learn other teaching methods than the ones we are using in Denmark. Apart from this, the encounter with the culture and the internal class distinction in Malaysia will be in focus, with the intention of creating an awareness and a debate about our way of life.
The purpose of travelling is to develop, push personal boundaries and form yourselves through experiences from the foreign culture. Malaysia provides a great opportunity for this as the country is composed of many different cultures due to its history. You will work with quality education, peace, justice, strong institutions and less inequality, which are all part of the UN Sustainable Development Goals and therefore in line with Ranum efterskole College's core ideas.
TEACHING
As part of the preparation for the journey and the foreign culture, you will immerse yourself in various topics related to Malaysian culture, traditions, religion, geography or history. You will prepare a presentation on a specific topic to be presented to the other students in the class. You will also prepare lesson plans and materials for teaching at the Hilla Community Centre School in the capital Kuala Lumpur, where you will be assigned a class in groups for which you will be responsible. The teaching will primarily be in maths, English, music, nature/geography, visual arts and physical education. The friendship school already has a relationship with Ranum, which is evident as they have the Ranum Efterskole logo on their shirts and have the REC friendship school emblem hanging on the school wall. You will also research a topic of your choice before and during the trip, so you can gain and communicate your new knowledge about the topic after the trip.
TRAVEL
During the trip, in addition to teaching at the friendship school, you will have the opportunity to experience Malaysia and its many cultures on your own through homestays, in groups of 2-4 people with refugee families associated with Hilla Community Centre School and we will also try to arrange an overnight stay with tribal people in the rainforest. During the trip, you will learn to utilise your own opportunities to help others, as you will be responsible for teaching the students of the friendship school for 3 days. Malaysia is a country rich in many different cultures, as both Chinese and Indian immigrants have travelled to the country since the 1700s and you will therefore have the opportunity to experience great cultural diversity within the country.
In addition to this, you will gain insight into the influence of the rainforest (Taman Negara) on the country, its flora and fauna, cultural experiences and sightseeing around Kuala Lumpur and one of its coastlines. You'll also have the opportunity to break your own boundaries through adventure disciplines, hot spring baths and encounters with rainforest critters and animals.
AFTER THE JOURNEY
After the trip, you must prepare and make a presentation of your journey, experiences and reflections through your chosen topics. You will work with print media, virtual media in the form of a blog/website/Facebook and video reports in connection with your presentation of your chosen topic. This will subsequently be presented as part of a newsletter, as a photo wall at school, as an introduction video for future students, as a lecture at school or as a presentation for parents' day at Ranum efterskole College.
