Surfing - Puerto Rico
Category
Cultural profile 2022Surf, sun and summer - that's something! In Puerto Rico you can combine all this with cultural learning, and get a great profile!
In Surf, Puerto Rico we learn basic and necessary surfing skills. Some we learn at school, others we have to get in the water to try out. We do that out in Cold Hawaii. Also, we will address relevant socio-economic and cultural issues in class.
The Lessons
The starting point of the course will be the history of Puerto Rico, colonialism and the island's current status in relation to the United States.
The next important element of teaching is that students should be active co-creators of the subject and the journey. They will help to prioritise the studies and activities to be carried out in Denmark and Puerto Rico.
We will also verify the claim that Puerto Rican lifestyles differ from Danish lifestyles. This concerns everything from family life, norms and traditions, schooling, and not least leisure life.
As promised in the above, students also learn basic and necessary skills related to surfing. Some we learn at school, others we have to get water in our hair to try out. We do that out in Cold Hawaii.
UN SDGs
The primary focus of the subject is these two:
- Goal 14: Life below water
- Objective 15 Life on land
However, it would be unavoidable not also to deal with:
- Goal 10 Reduce inequality
- Goal 13: Climate action
The trip
The journey will concentrate on these fields:
- Culture and history in Old Town San Juan
- Rainforest tour - El Yunque
- Experience bioluminescent organisms - in the Bio bay
- Surfing
- Hopefully it will be possible to arrange a school visit - where we will of course present about ourselves - in English...or even better, in Spanish.
In May we travel to Puerto Rico, where we will test our insights into cultural differences and similarities.
We will also see how human behaviour and the amazing forces of nature affect life on this unique island - both on land and in the sea.
The summer season rarely guarantees the best surfing in the northern hemisphere, yet we'll have a lot of good and pleasant hours on the water up in Puerto Rico's northwest corner around the towns of Isabela, Aguadilla and Rincon.
Corona: Restrictions, rules etc.
Important about Covid-19
Travellers arriving on international flights:
- Due to CDC guidelines, all travelers arriving on international flights must present a negative COVID-19 test (either antigen or PCR test) taken within one day prior to departure, along with proof of vaccination.
Non-US citizens or long-term residents must show proof of full vaccination against COVID-19 before travelling by air to the US from another country.
In Puerto Rico, masks are required indoors, regardless of vaccination status. Read more about this at: https://www.discoverpuertorico.com/info/travel-guidelines
Requirements for the students
- Passport must be valid at least 6 months after the trip begins.
- Courage to meet new people with a different view of life and different living conditions.
- We can't expect to stay with full board, so all students must be prepared to volunteer to cook one or two evenings.
