The trip

Panama is a country in Central America bordering Colombia and Costa Rica. The official language is Spanish - and Panama is particularly known for its beautiful scenery and the Panama Canal. Panama has a tropical climate, with temperatures in the capital ranging from 24°C to 29°C throughout the year.

About 7 hours away from Panama City to the south lies Cerro Hoya National Park. An area of rainforest, high mountains, beaches and rich wildlife. It is in this area that we will mainly stay in Panama.

The overall purpose of the trip is to visit Panama Wildlife conservation and their branch in Cerro Hoya - an organisation dedicated to conserving biodiversity, animal species and their habitats through a partnership with local people and organisations in Panama. It is a non-profit organization that runs on private donations and grants.

We will be part of Panama Wildlife Conservation's team of volunteers and may work with e.g:

  • Learning how to install camera companions in the rainforest and learning how to study the local wildlife.
  • Jungle trek - where we learn about the nearby rainforest.
  • Birdwatching - where we'll keep an eye out for the green macaws.
  • Patrolling the nearby beaches, where we will keep an eye on the sea turtles' nests.
  • Catch birds and flags with nets and learn about them.
  • In addition, there may be activities such as getting out on local fishing boats with the opportunity to jump into the water.

A work and learning experience in a beautiful setting that supports the conservation of biodiversity and wildlife species in Panama.

The lessons

First of all, we need to find knowledge about Panama - here cultural knowledge as well as knowledge about the conservation of biodiversity and the animal species living in and around Cerro Hoya.

This subject is for the students who are dedicated to working with animals and making a small difference. It is going to be a lot of hard work mixed with pleasure and spectacular experiences.

Openness to meeting people with a different culture is important.

You have to be ready to get down and dirty and cross boundaries.

Passport must be valid at least 6 months after the trip begins.
